...did you know the English word “biology” is a combination of two words derived from Greek “bios” (life) and “logos” ( a word ), thus “biology” is the scientific study of life or living matter in all its forms and processes. Many important people have contributed to scientific thought and discoveries in that field. The ancient cultures produced renowned students and surgeons of natural science, however the roots of modern biology are traced back to the secular tradition of ancient Greek philosophy. Greek biologists were interested in how living things began, how they developed, and how they functioned. The most influential was a Greek philosopher Aristotle (384- 322 BC) who, for example, introduced classification of living things and used dissection of animals extensively. Some of his work contains accurate descriptions of living creatures. Keep in mind, there was no microscope or computer back then!
